Sacramento, CA: The California Storm announced today the signing of San Jose State freshman goalkeeper and Mountain West’s Newcomer of the Year Bente Pernot, pending league approval. The Dutch youth national team player originally from Geleen, Netherlands was the first freshman goalkeeper in Mountain West history to be named Newcomer of the Year and Mountain West Tournament MVP in the same season.
“I chose Cal Storm because of the competitiveness and the vision of the club,” said Pernot, about making her decision on where to play this summer before her sophomore year at SJSU. “I'm really excited to be joining the Storm this summer!”
Pernot had a huge rookie season for the Spartans, taking over as starting keeper early into the 2022-2023 season and starting the final 17 matches. She made the final save in a penalty shootout to win the Mountain West championship match against Wyoming and over the course of the entire season, totaled 74 saves and averaged .89 goals allowed in 1521 minutes of action. Besides being named Newcomer of the Year and Mountain West Tournament MVP, Pernot also was named to the Mountain West All-Tournament Team and the All-Conference Second Team.
“Bente is going to be a fantastic addition to the team,” said Coach Jamie Levoy. “Watching her last season, you can tell she commanded the respect of her team even as a rookie. She has a keen eye for defensive holes and is able to help direct her backline to fill them. I’m excited to get her into the team environment and get the season started!”
In the Netherlands, Pernot has spent time with the Dutch U14s, U15s, and U17s.
