San Ramon, CA – On July 9th the Storm travelled to San Ramon for their second game against the hosts. After previously losing 3-2 to San Ramon at home and both teams battling for 1st place in the NorCal Region, the game was deemed to be an exciting one to watch.
San Ramon took an early lead just 3 minutes into the game after retrieving the ball from a Storm midfield error. Ramon’s number 11, Ifeoma Onomonu slotted the ball into the left-hand corner of the net past the out-stretched arm of Storm goalkeeper, Caitlyn Duval.
But the Storm did not let the early threat upset them. With fire and passion burning through the Storm players, they settled into the game with a possession style type of play. After numerous connecting passes, Sherifatu Sumaila found Fiona O’sullivan making a run through the Ramon defense. The through ball to O’Sullivan left just herself and San Ramon goalkeeper, Lexis Nicholas one v one. O’Sullivan had the power and confidence to strike the ball past Nicolas, equalizing the score line for the Storm.
The 1st half ended at the tight 1-1 score line, leaving both teams equal for the beginning of the second half.
However, the Storm had other things in mind when entering the final 45mintues of the game. Just two minutes into the half, Fiona O’Sullivan once again found the back of the net for the Storm. Katie Hardeman found the feet of O’Sullivan from midfield, who then finished the play after beating the San Ramon defense and blasting the ball into the net for the second time.
The Storm were playing strong and making clean, neat passes as the game developed. The San Ramon offensive found it difficult to get past the sturdy Storm back line who were not willing to be beaten. On the 55th minute, ex Brazilian National Team player, Sissi lofted the ball over the San Ramon players, falling perfectly to Sumaila’s feet who was able to slide the ball past the San Ramon goalkeeper to make it 3-1 to the Storm.
Despite leading by two goals, the Storm were not ready to settle for a 3-1 result. On the 77th minute, San Ramon were penalized after a handball inside the penalty area. Teresa Noyola stepped up to take the awarded penalty and sent the goalkeeper the wrong way, calmly sending the ball into the opposite corner.
The game finished 4-1 to the Storm who were delighted to come back with the win, and motivated for the following game against West Coast Wildkatz that took place the next day.
On July 10, the Storm played their final home game against West Coast Wldkatz. They entertained the crowd scoring 6 goals and keeping a clean sheet.
The goals consisted of an incredible brace from Ariana Calderon, and one each for Sissi, Sherifatu Sumaila and Teresa Noyola.
The Storm play their final season game on July 16 where they travel to San Francisco to play the Nighthawks.
