California Storm conceded a 1-0 defeat versus the Sacramento State Hornets women’s soccer team.
Storm fielded 10 trialists, and just three regular season players. Storm was also forced to use a field player in goal. Vanessa Padilla, usually a midfielder, kept a clean sheet in the first half. But in the 50th minute, Sac State defender Alexa Heinzer got past Padilla to put the Hornets up 1-0.
Storm had dominated the first half, with five shots to Sac State’s two. But Storm could not make it past Sac State’s back four. All of Storm’s runs were cut by an impressive Sac State defense, forcing several corners.
Storm Head Coach Jerry Zanelli says that despite the loss, he was very impressed by all the players, especially Padilla.
“It was amazing to me that we had a field player playing goalkeeper. And she held them to just one goal," Zanelli said.
He said that overall, it was a successful day, regardless of the result.
“I was very pleased with all of our trialists. The played very well together, considering this is the first time they have done so, especially against such a strong team like Sac State.”
