California Storm charged to another victory against the West Coast Wildkatz, and continues to sit atop the Pacific-North Division of the Women’s Premier Soccer League.
It was a tense start to the game, as both teams traded possession back and forth, but neither creating any goal-scoring opportunities. The Wildkatz also had to deal with an early injury to their keeper, and a field player had to go into the Wildkatz goal in her place.
The Storm defense did a good job recovering possession from the Wildkatz, but the Storm offensive line could not break up into the Wildkatz goal box. Finally, in the last 15 minutes of the first half, Storm began creating chances, and a goal seemed to be near.
Four minutes into stoppage time, Storm finally converted one of their many chances. Sissi crossed in a corner from the right and Carolyn Greco nodded it in to put Storm ahead 1-0 going into halftime.
Storm came out hungry for more goals in the second half. In the 53rd minute, Storm’s Ana Sola broke away from the Wildkatz defense, and ran past the keeper to put an excellent through ball for Katie Dry, who calmly tapped it in. Ten minutes later, Marisha Schumacher-Hodge broke past the Wildkatz’s defensive line, went one-on-one with the keeper and slotted the ball past her, putting Storm up 3-0.
Adaurie Dayek pulled one back for the Wildkatz, after the Storm defense failed to clear the ball and keeper Ashley Luis couldn’t get a hand on it. The game ended 3-1, in favor of Storm.
With her goal, Dry is tied for top goal scorer of the WPSL Pacific-North Division, with three goals this season. Storm looks ready to advance to the play-offs, but they still have three regular season games left. Their last home will be Saturday June 28, when they take on Sacramento rival Primero de Mayo. Kick-off set for 7PM at Elk Grove High School.
Scoring Summary: Carolyn Greco (Sissi) 49, Katie Dry (Ana Sola) 53, Marisha Schumacher-Hodge 63
