SACRAMENTO, Calif. - California Storm will play against Fresno Freeze and Tottenham Hotspurs Eastbay Ladies this weekend. The Pacific-North region has now reached the middle of its season, and all teams are gearing up to fight it out for a spot at the regional playoffs in Seattle.
Storm are still trying to climb into a playoff spot in the Pacific-North standings. The team had bounced back from their season opener, where they lost 5-1 at Fresno, going undefeated at home for three straight games. This past Sunday that streak was broken, when Storm lost to San Francisco Nighthawks for the first time in team history, in a tight and scrappy match.
Fresno will be the first of two tough opponents this weekend for Storm. Fresno is undefeated in their first season in the WPSL, winning four of their six matches by four goals or more. The only team that has not been defeated by Fresno this season is North Bay Wave FC, who used their home crowd advantage to secure a 2-2 tie.
After facing Fresno on Saturday, Storm will visit Tottenham Hotspurs Eastbay Ladies. Tottenham has done well in their inaugural season and currently sit just one point behind first-placed Fresno in the Pac-North standings. This will be the first ever meeting between Storm and Tottenham, and Storm’s first away game since May 15.
Both weekend games are must wins for Storm if the team wants to reach the regional playoffs. Storm currently sits in third place with nine points, while Fresno and Tottenham sit first and second, respectively. If Storm wins both the weekend games and Tottenham and Fresno lose their other weekend matches, Storm could level up with Tottenham and within a point of Fresno.
