Sacramento, CA – California Storm entertained their home crowd during their first home game of the season by netting 5 past the Utah Arrows.
Tais Cotta (Brasil) opened the score line for the Storm in just over 3 minutes of the first half. Sherifatu Sumalia (Ghana) drilled the ball across the 18-yard- box to find Cotta, who had made a perfectly timed run to the back post to send the ball into the back of the net.
The Storm possessed the ball well, displaying their talent once more in the first half as Karissa Garcia finished an impressive row of passes from the storm offense in the 19th minute.
Soon after, A 1v1 chance for the Arrows was stopped with a world class save by Storm goalkeeper, Caitlyn Duval (Chico State).
With a total of 12 shots and 6 corners for the home side, the majority of the goals were found in the second half of the game.
Having travelled a long way, the Arrows showed signs of tired legs as the second half commenced. Within 5 minutes after the whistle blew, Katie Hardeman assisted Teresa Noyola (Mexican National Team) to make it 3 for the Storm.
In the space of two minutes, the Storm found the net twice. Sumailia found her first goal of the night assist by Jennifer Cudjoe (Ghana), setting up Sherifatu Sumailia in-front of the goal to place the ball home. The second goal was awarded after Fiona was fouled by an Arrow defender inside the penalty area. Fiona was able to compose herself as the first penalty was disallowed, she smashed the ball into the bottom left-hand corner, making it an impossible save for the Utah goalie.
Storm head coach, Jerry Zanelli is proud of the way his team are performing, he said,
“I hope to continue our winning streak into the future and keep playing with such prowess.”
The next Storm game will be held on Saturday 4th June, where they will host Tottenham Hotspur for their second meeting this season.
